Preventing a Toxic Gas Eruption of Lake Kivu Needs its Gas Extracted
Understanding the Project Context
In the East African Rift Valley between Rwanda and the DRC, Lake Kivu is a deep, high-altitude lake holding a massive, biogenic gas resource. It is at once a major clean energy resource and an existential threat. Hydragas is supporting methane mitigation in Lake Kivu by gas extraction as a form of emissions reduction. Over 20 years ago, I was invited to visit the lake and lead a feasibility study for the government of Rwanda and private investors. Our scope was to assess biomethane production from the lake resource for power generation to fulfil a shortfall with affordable energy. They wanted to expand a small, experimental, 1965 gas extraction facility that fed the Heineken brewery with boiler fuel.
As two experienced chemical engineers, we were invited to assess the facility’s government data room and visit the lake in December 2001. The lakeside unit’s design we inspected was, crude and inefficient but had produced “swamp” gas for 40 years.
During this visit, just 7 years after the catastrophic genocide, we could see how Rwanda’s people were visibly traumatized, struggling to get by in a moribund economy. Rolling power blackouts averaged 18 hours daily. The country was on financial life-support, aspiring to re-establish normality. Relationships with their bigger neighbour, the DRC, were tense. This followed the escape of tens of thousands of “genocidaires” across their border after a million people were slaughtered in 100 days. Internally, one could sense distrust and suspicion among the survivors. The “Gacaca” process was getting underway in town and village public hearings, where thousands of those guilty of participation confessed their roles, and sought community forgiveness. We sensed the urgency of their needs and the frustrating lack of alternatives. Houses and streets were dark at night, with just 16 MW of the country’s power supply working for over 8 million people.
